Fans of the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia were not expecting the dramatic ending in the 13th season finale.
The usually harsh and comedic show left people breathless.
Series creator and cast member Rob McElhenney performed a gut-wrenching modern dance number with professional ballerina Kylie Shea to express his character’s emotions around his homosexuality.
Watch the dance here.

One fan was still confused about what it all meant.
As a sunny superfan, I need help understanding it. Unlike Frank, I don't get it

And then this guy came in like a rock star and broke it all down.
Basically the women represents his faith and Mac himself represents him being gay. It’s raining due to the time it was raining on the cruise ship. It’s his inner conflict with him believing in god while being gay. Eventually he accepts he can be gay and religious st the same time

People were feeling it and getting into the nuance of it all.
This scene made Mac a much more interesting and complex character, it just made so much sense. I understand many fans will not like it, but I applaud writers @RMcElhenney, Charlie Day and everyone involved for this extremely brave choice.

Props to @DannyDeVito as well, who proved he has incredible range and made this scene so much more poignant. He was Dennis' and Dee's 'father', then he was Charlie's 'father', but now he is Mac's, who needed one most.

I feel like his dad leaving was, in a way, part of the dance.
— Mike Wilson (@tattudeguyWA) November 9, 2018
It was! Frank represents his dad or at least a father figure that he wanted approval from.

This has been my favorite comedy show since season one. The season finale firmly cemented sunny as my favorite comedy ever. Sometimes art needs to deliver what you least expect, it needs to make you stop and think, it needs to be new and meaningful. This was, and more

Fans aren’t going anywhere.
They love this show.
I love #SunnyFXX, it's pissed me off, made me laugh, annoyed me, made me shout at my TV, but this, this was special, I got it but I didn't get it I felt something and I'm still thinking about it, people saying it wasn't #SUNNY but it was #Mac and it was glorious. @RMcElhenney

I watched this dance over and over again. The most powerful message ever. I cried at the end. Rob, that was the BEST performance I have ever seen. Also, your body is amazing. So proud of how talented you are.

That was so hard to watch. I'm straight and an atheist but that ruined me ????

I love this show so much. There have been so many laughs and think pieces and I didn’t think I could ever possibly love it more…until this. I can’t stop thinking about it. It already means so much to so many and takes my breath away every time!
