Stephen Colbert Just Asked Keanu Reeves What Happens When We Die, And His Answer Is Peak Keanu Reeves

If you’ve ever seen Keanu Reeves do an interview, you know he’s a fun guy. Of course, that’s to be expected from the man who starred in Speed, The Matrix trilogy, and of course, the John Wick series.

For those of you who don’t know, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum comes out this week, and Reeves is doing all he can to promote it. This included appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Stephen asked the question we all want answered, and Reeves gave us the perfect one.

But let’s back up a little.

The interview started out normal enough. Since the John Wick movie is the one coming out, Stephen started the interview about that:

Reeves told Stephen he doesn’t do his own stunts, so he won’t be in the scene where he gets hit by a car, but he does do his own actions, meaning any sweet fight scenes or martial arts moves you see are all pure Keanu.

Then Reeves starts in on the many animals in this film, including dogs you don’t dare look in the eye, cats that make the dogs go crazy, and of course, a horse that Reeves had to fight on top of.

Reeves admits he’d ridden a little before this scene, but we doubt he’s ever had to fight on one before. Stephen doesn’t seem to like the idea.

He asks:

“Does that make you nervous at all?”

Kenau responds that “it’s a movie” to which Stephen reminds him,

“But the horse is real.”

Reeves, however, doesn’t seem worried that the horse could throw him or that he could get tramped.

He does however acknowledge,

“You can die!”

And therein lies the first mention of death in this interview. But it doesn’t stop there. After some more chatting about the new installment in the John Wick series, Stephen brings up another epic movie series starring Reeves: The Bill & Ted series.

Turns out Bill and Ted are getting a new movie, called Bill & Ted Face the Music. The movie series, which started with the film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, follow two idiotic high schoolers who use a time machine to try to become famous musicians, despite the fact that they are terrible.

According to Reeves, the third movie takes place over 20 years after the second (which makes sense considering it’s been over 20 years since the second film, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, came out). Bill and Ted were supposed to write a song that would unite the world, but they haven’t. Then they find out they have 80 minutes to finally write this song before the entire universe ends.

This plot point prompts Stephen to ask the million dollar question:

“What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?”

Many of us have asked this question of ourselves and other people, and if you know Keanu Reeves, you know he’s known for being philosophical… in an airheaded way. So I’m sure everyone was on the edge of their seat to hear his answer.

Reeves gave an answer that was neither philosophical nor airheaded.

It was just sweet:

I know that the ones who love us will miss us.”

Stephen isn’t exactly known for going speechless, but that’s what this answer shocked him into, followed by a wistful smile and a grateful handshake. The audience loved Keanu’s answer and “awww’d” over it. The live audience wasn’t the only one that absolutely melted, however.

People on Twitter were just as taken:

Some people are just taken by Keanu in general:

Others commented about how they were unsurprised but happy with Stephen’s reaction:

We don’t know what happens when we die. All we can do is guess. If that scares you, we can take comfort in the things that do know.

Like that we shouldn’t do this:

And of course:

We stan Keanu! And let’s be honest… who doesn’t?
