When Isaac Hempstead Wright Read The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale Script, He Literally Thought He Was Being Punk’d

THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT THE FINALE OF GAME OF THRONES SO TURN BACK NOW!

If you were surprised by the way Game of Thrones ended, you’re certainly not alone. Most fans did not see Bran ascending the Iron Throne, with reactions ranging from full-on rage to a thousand variations of “lolwut?”

But if you were among the latter, you’re not alone: even Bran himself, actor Isaac Hempstead Wright, was like:

Hempstead Wright told Entertainment Weekly that it sounded so far-fetched, he thought it was a joke. As he put it to EW:

“When I got to the [Dragonpit scene] in the last episode, and they’re like, ‘What about Bran?’ I had to get up and pace around the room,” he said. “I genuinely thought it was a joke script and that [showrunners] David and Dan sent to everyone a script where their own character ends up on the Iron Throne. I was like, ‘Yeah, good one guys. Oh shit! It’s actually real?!’”

Issues of plausibility aside, it wouldn’t have been out of characters for Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss to try to pull a fast one on the cast.

As Entertainment Weekly previously reported, they’ve done it several times before, starting all the way back in season one when they sent actor Kit Harington a scene in which Jon Snow‘s face gets disfigured.

And Maisie Williams told EW she also thought the sex scene she had to shoot in season eight had to be a prank. (It very much was not!)

Anyway all jokes aside (see what I did there), Hempstead Wright told EW that though he’s disappointed he didn’t get a “good death scene with an exploding head or something,” he’s overall impressed with the way things ended (as opposed to many fans petitioning for a redo!)–and, in a guest column he wrote in The Hollywood Reporter, is overwhelmed with gratitude for his experience on the show:

It would be hard to overstate just how important a part of my life Game of Thrones has been. Practically every key life event I have ever experienced is in some way connected to my time on Thrones.

And while plenty of folks online were also feeling the love…

Lots of people were right there with Isaac in thinking the ending was a joke…

Game of Thrones is now officially over, and all we have left of it is a finale that left us scratching our heads.

Hopefully, we’ll feel better about the upcoming prequels!
