It seems that no matter the topic or event, President Trump can always make speeches about himself.
On Tuesday, law enforcement officers from around the country gathered in Washington for the 37th National Peace Officers memorial service, an event honoring those who have died in the line of duty.
In a speech peppered with Trump’s trademark self-congratulatory comments, the President took some time to honor law enforcement officers before turning the memorial service into a political event.
Today is one of the most important and solemn occasions of the year – the day we pay tribute to the Law Enforcement Heroes who gave their lives in the line of duty. They made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live in safety and peace. We stand with our police (HEROES) 100%! pic.twitter.com/XDtYRUeOk1

Trump used the death of Border Patrol Officer Rogelio Martinez to renew calls for the completion of the border wall.
Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt. We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible. We will, and must, build the Wall!

Trump has vowed to bring those responsible for Martinez’s death to justice, but the FBI investigation into the matter concluded that his death was likely an accident.
That hasn’t stopped the President from invoking Martinez’s memory in the name of border security.

Trump then segued into immigration policy, taking aim at sanctuary cities, MS-13, and catch and release policies.

Though it came as no surprise, those watching were still upset that Trump politicized the event.
Unfortunately you chose to turn it into a campaign event.

Why did he turn into Apprentice 3.0 reality tv show. He's an embarrassment. It a memorial service. He politized a memorial service. I guess trying to get more than 12 people to clip. You don't think they notice. He dissed the survivors of those fallen police officers.

He's going to bring up his election win and will awkardly congratulate himself for the things the unrelated military department done instead of NPO. Definitely.

Some found Trump’s remarks honoring law enforcement disingenuous after his recent harsh criticism of the FBI.
From a guy that compared FBI to Nazi soldiers? Yea great guy

Unless you are the FBI or investigating him.

Trump also advocated for stronger protection for law enforcement, calling for the death penalty for those who kill police officers. The Trump administration has also rolled back Obama-era restrictions on police departments acquiring certain types of unused military gear.
But some felt Trump missed the larger picture, noting that stricter gun control might be the best way to protect police officers’ lives.
I watched you deliver your speech today. My heart hurts for the many law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. What you failed to mention was how many were shot to death needlessly because we have a gun problem. No other country has this issue. None

We could try getting some of the guns off of the streets and see if that works.

We can never be sure what Donald Trump might say next, but it seems we can always count on him to celebrate his favorite holiday.
