In what appears to be another round of “I know you are, but what am I?” Donald Trump has cancelled the scheduled June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In a letter released to reporters addressed to Kim, Trump, (the same man who referred to the North Korean leader as Rocket Man, and threatened to bring “fire and fury”) sited N.K.’s anger and hostility as the reason for pulling out. The letter went on to say:
Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.
You can read the full statement below.
One thing that doesn’t come as a surprise is Trump’s ability to leave a trail of confusion. South Korea is said to have been blindsided by the letter. Spokesperson, Kim Eui-kyeom said:
We are attempting to make sense of what, precisely, President Trump means.
Trump’s letter appears to be in response to strong comments from North Korea’s vice-foreign minister Choe Son-hui, who in turn was responding to comments made by V.P. Mike Pence. Son-hui said:
Whether the US will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision … of the US. We will neither beg the US for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us.
People were quick to condemn the decision by Trump to cancel the talks.
So we are foregoing a chance at a historic resolution to a nuclear crisis because we object to someone we know being called a “political dummy”? Are you kidding me? So much for that self-appointed Nobel peace prize. #NoLeadership #Pathetic #Basta

‘How’s that Nobel Prize working out for ya?’ Internet hilariously mocks Trump’s ‘break up letter’ to Kim Jong Un https://t.co/moz7IzIMA2

Along with the breakup letter, Trump also sent Kim half of the Peace Summit Coin, imploring him to wear it around his neck until they're reunited, in love pic.twitter.com/USjVHiDoWh
