An Unnamed Congressional Candidate Asked Russia For Dirt On Their Opponent, Grand Jury Indictment Reveals

Russian intelligence operatives were approached by an unnamed congressional candidate in the midst of campaigning for the 2016 election.

The new nugget of information comes from a new 29-page indictment being studied by those investigating this case.

The operatives were disguised as a hacker named Guccifer 2.0, and the mysterious political figure was searching for dirt on an opponent. This came from as a result of the investigation of the country’s infamous potential interference in the 2016 United States Presidential Election.

The congressional candidate reached out to Guccifier 2.0 on August 15, 2016, after it was speculated that Guccifier 2.0 hacked the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Guccifier 2.0 has since been identified as a part of a Russian intelligence group based in their military – the GRU.

The indictment gave sparse details on the request:

It has not been revealed who the candidate was, although people do have their guesses:

Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team has remained quiet and tight-lipped on the hack.

Florida was one of the states that had several candidates – GOP Reps. Ron DeSantis, Brian Mast, and Carlos Curbelo – benefit from the DCCC being hacked, leaving them suspect to suspicion.

Another suspect is GOP Rep. Ryan Costello from Pennsylvania, because of documents that were leaked on his opponent, Mike Parrish. However, his team continues to maintain their innocence, claiming that they did not utilize the documents:

“When news broke that this material had likely been stolen by a foreign actor, we immediately said, ‘We’re not going to use it”

On top of that, his communications director Natalie McLaughlin was asked flat-out if he was the mysterious congressional candidate. Her response?

“Absolutely not.”

Twitter didn’t appear to be surprised about the news:

Nor do many people believe that the “innocent” suspects are telling the truth:

There are no further details of the unnamed figure at the moment.

The investigation includes indictments against a dozen Russian nationals, all of whom were a part of the GRU.

The Justice Department confirmed what a mass of people were already thinking: the hack targeted Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic National Committee.
