The 116th Congress is officially in session, and it is groundbreaking in so many ways.
The newest Congress includes the country’s first ever Muslim women, the first Somali-American, the first Ecuadorian-American, and many others.
Many different books, not just the Bible, were used to swear in officials.
It is clear that 2018’s midterm election results will change the game on Capitol Hill and in some ways, Washington D.C. is already feeling the effects of its newest residents.
Rashida Tlaib is the new Representative for Michigan’s 13th district.
After her swearing in, her sons dabbed in celebration. One of them also told her,
“Momma, look you won, bullies don’t win.”
Her response was epic.
“Baby, they don’t, because we’re gonna go in there and we’re gonna impeach the motherfucker.”
Whether she actually used those exact words with her son is not clear.
Her statement was actually made during her speech at a MoveOn event the night of her swearing in.

Since her comment, Representative Jerry Nadler shared his disapproval.
The next morning, Nadler went on CNN saying that it is “too early” to talk about impeachment of President Trump.
House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on Rashida Tlaib's vow to impeach Trump: "I don't really like that kind of language, but more to the point, I disagree with what she said. It is too early to talk about that intelligently. We have to follow the facts" https://t.co/Ctwc5n4hGK pic.twitter.com/OsCOTQnuj2

“I don’t really like that kind of language, but more to the point, I disagree with what she said. It is too early to talk about that intelligently. We have to follow the facts.”
He went on to say,
“We have to get the facts, and we’ll see where the facts lead, and maybe that’ll lead to impeachment, and maybe it won’t.”
The president also Tweeted his disdain.
How do you impeach a president who has won perhaps the greatest election of all time, done nothing wrong (no Collusion with Russia, it was the Dems that Colluded), had the most successful first two years of any president, and is the most popular Republican in party history 93%?

However, after the disapproving comments, Tlaib took to Twitter to stand by her previous statement.
I will always speak truth to power. #unapologeticallyMe

This is not just about Donald Trump. This is about all of us. In the face of this constitutional crisis, we must rise.

Her op-ed that was referred to in the CNN interview with Representative Nadler directly confronted whether or not there were enough facts to pursue impeachment.
“We already have overwhelming evidence that the president has committed impeachable offenses, including, just to name a few: obstructing justice; violating the emoluments clause; abusing the pardon power; directing or seeking to direct law enforcement to prosecute political adversaries for improper purposes; advocating illegal violence and undermining equal protection of the laws; ordering the cruel and unconstitutional imprisonment of children and their families at the southern border; and conspiring to illegally influence the 2016 election through a series of hush money payments.”
Many people support Tlaib’s desire to impeach Trump.

When a woman “misbehaves”, there will always be a swift response from a chorus of men who think they can tell her how to behave. Frankly, I’d rather make HERstory than fit into HIS 💪

Whether or not you agree with her statement, it’s time to dissolve the double standards surrounding how men and women in politics speak.
