On October 1, 2017, couple of three years, Brandon Helmick, 21, and MyKenzie Lane,22, found themselves in a terrifying situation. While attending a music festival in Las Vegas, the two were listening to Jason Aldean perform when shots rang out.
Soon the country would find out that a gunman had opened fire on the crowd from a hotel window, killing 58 people and injuring 851. Lane was one of those 851. As the crowd became aware what was happening Helmick threw his body over his girlfriend to protect her. When they decided to make a run for it, Lane was hit in the ankle.
With Lane unable to run, Helmick carried her to safety where they were able to find a ride to the hospital. Lane was treated for her injuries and recovered, but the memory of that night still lingers. However, six months later, the couple is ready to make new memories. They have become engaged.
Lane said about the engagement:
I said yes! [I don’t know] what he said to me in the moment, I was too busy crying. But I know it was sweet.
However, Helmick remembers exactly what he said:
I told her, ‘I’ve wanted this from the beginning and this is everything I want for the future, I love you with all of my heart.’
Lane added how the shooting affected their relationship, bringing them closer.
[We have] endless amounts of blessings to be thankful for every day because we’re still here. [That night] impacted our lives in more ways than one. We don’t like to be apart for long periods of time, we stick together especially at night. Our relationship has always meant the world to me. But when someone sacrifices their life for you, how could you ever get more reassurance than that?
Helmick and Lane will be married on August 3, 2017.
“Lane was hit by a bullet that night and she’s alive today because Helmick used his body to shield her.” https://t.co/oCH2AiFW1l
