Pregnant Woman Trips A Child, Causes Concussion–But She Got Caught On Tape

A woman in Northern China was dining with her husband near the entrance of a restaurant when a four-year-old kid blasted onto the scene, inadvertently whacking the woman with a plastic curtain and the sheer force of his childlike exuberance, as kids sometimes do. Moments later, as the boy ran back past her, the woman stuck out a leg and sent him flying headfirst into the ground.

Kids can be annoying but it’s not a great idea to deliberately injure one in public. In front of a security camera.

Gnarly. Did we mention the trip-happy woman is seven months pregnant? Despite that, or perhaps because of it, she finished her meal without attempting to help, likely hoping that folks would think the kid just fell for no reason.

As you can imagine, the collective hackles of the internet shot straight up.

The assailant avoided immediate punishment because no one but the camera saw what happened, and people probably don’t immediately assume the worst of a pregnant lady.

According to the China Post, the boy’s mother told China Youth Daily:

At first I thought my boy tripped himself, but later he told me that the woman tripped him, which was confirmed by other customers in the shop. I checked the CCTV and was so angry that I called the police.

Some people wondered why the kid was running around a public space unsupervised.

It turns out the child’s father, who runs one of the shops in the area, had sent him to the restaurant to grab some chopsticks. To make matters worse, the child reportedly has a heart condition and suffered a concussion from the fall.

People predicted legal action.

Having been identified on the security footage and savaged online after the video went viral, the woman turned herself in, apologized, and offered to pay medical expenses for the boy. As of six days later, he was still hospitalized in stable condition.

The boy’s mother magnanimously declined to press charges:

Police said they would detain her for 10 days and penalize her 1,000 yuan [U.S. $160], but she is seven months pregnant. We do not wish to affect her. I have children myself. I can understand.

She understands the urge to stick out a leg and send a child’s face into the pavement? That’s some commentary on the joys of parenting. Yikes.
