Man Detained By ICE While Bringing Pregnant Wife To Hospital Was Wanted For Murder, Authorities Say

On Wednesday, Joel Arrona-Lara was driving his wife, Maria del Carmen Venegas, to a California hospital near their home for the birth of their son during a scheduled C-section. When they stopped to get gas on the way they were approached by ICE agents.

Venegas showed the agents her ID, but Arrona-Lara did not have his with him. He offered to go back to their nearby home to retrieve it. Instead, the ICE agents declined and took Arrona-Lara into custody, leaving Venegas at the gas station, hysterical. She had to drive herself to the hospital.

Venegas and her son are both healthy, though Venegas is understandably distressed. She told reporters that her husband has never been stopped by the police or had trouble with the law.

On Friday, ICE issued a report saying that Joel Arrona-Lara isn’t a U.S. citizen. Then, on Saturday, they issued another report saying that Mexico had an outstanding homicide warrant out for Arrona-Lara.

Why would the alleged arrest warrant come a day after the statement that he wasn’t a citizen? And how would they know that such a warrant existed if Arrona-Lara didn’t have his ID on him?

Twitter feels like something doesn’t add up.

Others are sick about the lack of humanity behind ICE’s actions.

We hope Venegas can find answers and some peace of mind.
