*SPOILER ALERT* – article contains plot points from ‘Night School.’
Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s characters in the upcoming comedy movie Night School seem to be flying straight towards an inevitable romance. Hart’s onscreen wife doesn’t seem to appreciate him, Haddish and Hart bond through the learning process, and it’s just Hollywood convention: the male lead and the female lead generally get together by the end of the movie.
Night School, however, flipped the script, and Tiffany Haddish couldn’t be any happier about it!

In a pivotal scene of the movie, Haddish and Hart are dancing at prom when Hart’s character leans in for a kiss. It’s only then revealed that Haddish’s character is a lesbian!
Haddish told Entertainment Weekly she was overjoyed at the surprising twist:
I love that we switched it up. Me, being in love with Kevin? Ew, gross. [Laughs.] He’s like my brother. If they would have gone, ‘Okay, now you guys have to kiss,’ I would have been like, ‘Ughhhh.’ That would have been really hard for me to do. Kevin’s not gross, I’m just saying that’s like my big brother. Literally, I’ve known him for so long and he’s mentored me and checked me on so much stuff just like a big brother would, even though he’s only like four or five months older than me.
That's her little brother

Though not a member of the LGBTQ community, Haddish was also glad to bring a gay character to the screen:
I was really happy with that scene and I thought it would be great for the people and the LGBT crew. It’s not about sex or anything and really about caring and nurturing this person to be their best self.
Tiffany haddish saying repeatedly “i’m gay” and “i’m a lesbian” and “i like women” in Night School honestly made my whole week

Hart, a co-writer on the script, was also pretty happy he wouldn’t have to lock lips with Haddish:
We wanted to go the opposite way from what is typically the case when dealing with movies like this. These movies always give you a familiar ending, one that people can hint at and get towards. We thought it was a fun way to throw the curveball and give the audience something else to laugh at and appreciate. In our screenings and testings, we got a great response.
night school was pretty good actually? makes me want to go back to school lmao. Tiffany Haddish saying, “I'm a lesbian”, really made my night (aside from all might ♥️✨)

Though strictly platonic, whatever’s going on between Hart and Haddish in the movie seems to be working. Many of the positive reviews of the film center around the fun dynamic between its two major stars!
Haddish says she’d be open to working with Hart again, on one condition:
I would definitely work with Kevin again. I would have to make more money, though. [Laughs.]
movie was a banger! loved it! I think it was your best work yet…keep em comin!
