Viola Davis is busy promoting her new movie, Widows, written by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn and directed by Academy Award winner Steve McQueen. She stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about the film, but the interview took a turn when Fallon asked her about the cleanse she attempted in preparation for her role.
Spoiler alert: It did not go well.
In the video, Davis explains how this particular cleanse was encouraged by a makeup artist on the set. It involved meditation and, while they were allowed to eat, they were not allowed to chew or suck because that was an “act of aggression.”
“We had to do it for 28 days. I lasted for two days.”
She went on:
“I was in the damn jacuzzi one day and my niece called. She pissed me off so damn bad. I was like ‘why the hell are you doing that?’ Went upstairs, ate a hamburger. Went to the drive-through at McDonald’s.”
People found Davis’ story relatable:

But most fans were more focused on the film than the cleanse.

Some people were blessed with the chance to see an early screening.
Had a chance to see a screening of Ms. Voila’s new movie Widows last night and no doubt about it, this is a movie your going want to see. The ensemble cast, the drama and the twist and turns and all the emotion’s you can fathom all rolled up in 2:10 minute movie.

Saw an early screening already and it was pretty great. I thought Daniel Kaluuya stole the show.

The film is earning rave reviews. Owen Gleiberman wrote in Variety:
“…it’s galvanizing to see Davis seize the kind of role that she doesn’t have to cozy up to. The dialogue has the snap of witty danger that’s become Gillian Flynn’s signature.”
Widows is in theaters now.
