Unaware Band Frontman Doesn’t Recognize Christina Aguilera And Denies Her Request To Sing With Him

What would you do if you got the chance to sing with legendary singer Christina Aguilera? The voice behind mega-hits like “Genie in a Bottle,” “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” and “Moves like Jagger?”

Most of us would jump at the chance to sing with someone who sold 75 million records worldwide and earned five Grammys and one Latin Grammy.

But if you’re anything like the frontman for the local New Orleans band Aguilera approached last Thursday, November 8, you would say “no thanks.”

Because you fail to recognize her and turn her away!

The band—a reggae group known as Claude Bryant and the All Stars—was playing at Cafe Negril, as they do every Thursday night.

Aguilera was in town for the following night’s performance at The Saenger Theater as part of her Liberation tour.

After dancing for a while, Aguilera decided to approach the band’s frontman, Claude Bryant, and ask if she could sing a song with them. Sadly, Bryant failed to recognize her and wouldn’t hand over the microphone.

In a video, taken by a nearby fan, Christina can be heard accepting the denial gracefully:

“You don’t want that? Oh, it’s OK. I don’t have to sing.”

The next night, during her show, Aguilera told the story to her audience:

“I go to this little bar and there’s this live band playing, and I was with a couple of my dancers and I was just like, ‘Let me just get up on stage and jam with this guy. Maybe I’ll sing a song or whatever and be fun’.”

“He would not give me the mic. He was, like, a little older and he was just like, he was not feeling it. He was not gonna give up his mic.”

“I was like, ‘Oh, I just want to come just let me come up,’ and he just said, ‘What, are you gonna dance for me?’ I was like, ‘No, I just want to sing a song with you’.”

As the audience laughed, she continued her tale:

“So I was like, ‘OK I’ll just save it for tomorrow, then.’ It’s alright. It’s all good. He was like, ‘Don’t hurt yourself!’ I was like, OK.”

“This is just—you’re not feeling me. It’s OK. I’m just gonna depart ways. Be on my little merry way. Find somewhere else to go.”

Twitter users found the entire encounter hilarious!

Bryant later apologized to Aguilera in an interview with WGNO—it turns out he didn’t even recognize her!

“I’m sorry, Christina. I just didn’t recognize you! I didn’t recognize her because she had a cap over her head and over her eyes.”

“She was in a jersey. She didn’t introduce herself to me. I asked her if she wanted to dance and she said that she wanted to sing.”

“I started playing the beginning riff of the song, ‘No, No, No’ by Bob Marley, but then her bodyguard picked her up off the stage and she left.”

Bryant extended an invitation to Aguilera to come by the next time she’s in town.
