Dakota Johnson Says Her Menstrual Cycle Is ‘Ruining Her Life’ And We Totally Get It

Dakota Johnson recently got real about her period and tbh, same girl.

In an interview with InStyle‘s Victoria Moorhouse, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress was totally candid about perfumes, drug store purchases, and her menstrual cycle.

For some context, Johnson and Moorhouse had been discussing what Johnson would buy at a drugstore for $30.

Johnson replied:

“hair clips and candy and eye drops. Gum. Bobby pins.”

But back to Dakota’s visit from Aunt Flow.

Dakota’s discussion of her period came somewhat unsolicited when she was asked,

“What’s one unanswered question you still have about beauty?”

While most of our minds might go to “What’s really the best night cream?” or “How early is too early to start anti-aging products?”, Dakota’s mind went to a much more practical and mysterious place.

She answered the question with this:

“If I’m honest, my hormonal changes during my menstrual cycle are ruining my life. Every month. It’s unbelievable. It’s really fucking amazing.”

She went on to revel in the mystery of menstruation:

“I can’t get a grip on it. I’m like, what? Every time, I’m totally scandalized about what happens to my body and my brain. My boobs are like eight times the size they normally are. It’s really a traumatic thing, and it happens every month. I just can’t get used to it.”

She went on to talk about the confusion of birth control.

“It’s also very tricky to figure out what type of birth control you’re meant to be on, and if it’s even healthy. This is something that, again, I’m advocating with Global Citizen: Reproductive education. What it means to have a woman body, and how do you honor it the right way? How do you not jam chemicals into your brain in order to feel good? It’s a remarkable thing. I really would like to understand and be able to manage things a little better, know what’s happening in my body, and know what I’m putting into it.”

The actress has every girl around raising their hands in agreement.

“I understand you babe”

Others are thankful that Dakota is speaking about birth control and how it’s far from perfect.

“Dakota talking about the importance of healthy birth control reminded me of my doctor saying that contraceptives are poisons. It’s really important to find the best method for you. Each one is a different way.”

“If I’m honest, my hormonal changes during my menstrual cycle are ruining my life. I can’t control myself. My breasts are like eight times the size they normally are. “- 100% identification ????”

And don’t forget Johnson’s work with Global Citizen ????.

I’m so glad she’s upfront about the many things women go through, from the horrors and tragedies to the monthly annoyance of periods.
