The Most Important Mental Health Quotes From Carrie Fisher

Actress and writer Carrie Fisher, was known around the world for her roles in the Star Wars franchise and films such as When Harry Met Sally, along with a number of books including Wishful Drinking, and Postcards from the Edge. Even with an impressive body of work, her biggest legacy may very well be her willingness to discuss mental health disorders with humor and compassion. By doing so, Fisher was able to reach out and help a vast number of people realize they were not along. She opened a dialogue by her transparency to discuss her own struggles with bipolar disorder.

Fisher, known for her comedic timing and gift for words, left behind a number of quotes discussing mental health. She passed away on December 27, 2016 but her wisdom and inspiration will live on.

Fisher wasn’t afraid to show her fierceness.

I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I’m still surviving it, but bring it on.

From her book Wishful Thinking.

One of the things that baffles me (and there are quite a few) is how there can be so much lingering stigma with regards to mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder. In my opinion, living with manic depression takes a tremendous amount of balls. At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of.

Fisher’s musings are often quoted on Instagram.

She was nothing if not courageous saying:

We have been given a challenging illness, and there is no other option than to meet those challenges. Think of it as an opportunity to be heroic—not ‘I survived living in Mosul during an attack’ heroic, but an emotional survival. An opportunity to be a good example to others who might share our disorder.

In celebration of the unofficial May the fourth, Star Wars Day, folks are sharing their favorite quotes and images of Fisher.
