Poor granny. All she wanted to do was show her love and support for her country on its birthday.
Unfortunately, for 25 years she’s been wearing the wrong shirt to do so.
Dale Cheesman took to Twitter on July 2, 2018 to talk about his grandma, a patriotic woman who for a quarter-of-a-century wore the same flag t-shirt on the United States of America’s Independence Day.
The problem? It’s been the wrong flag.
As Dale points out, while watching the World Cup, the family suddenly recognized the flag his grandma has been sporting. It’s the flag of the Central American country of Panama.
My grandma has worn the same shirt with red, white, blue, and stars to celebrate the 4th of July for more than 25 years. Every year, she wears the exact same shirt.
Thanks to the #WorldCup we finally noticed it's the Panama Flag.
Over 25 years of treason. pic.twitter.com/j9sLoWo9QY

Dale even goes back to 2002 to prove that grandma’s been sporting the shirt for quite a while.

People found the mistake, and Grandma, adorable.

One can see how the confusion would happen. It’s not unusual for t-shirts to design the American flag differently for style purposes.
Though the red star is maybe a little out of place considering since the stars on the American flag are all white.
We can all feel for Grandma with the potential embarrassment her mistake could cause. But Grandma Cheesman received nothing but love from the nation she’s spent 25 years showing her love for.
Grandma received plenty of invitations from Panama, where everyone seems delighted at her little mix-up.
ur grandma is so cute, tell her she can come visit panama any time!

Even some people with Panamanian roots in the U.S. were quite alright with her mixing up the flags.
that’s an awesome story, if she by any chance in Boston this 4th of july I’ll give her a Panama flag and a hug.

One individual even chimed in to give her the proper day to wear the flag – November 3, Panama’s Independence Day.
Tell your grandma to wear it on Nov. 3rd Panama's Independence Day. We support her!!

One Twitter user may have broken the real story, however.
For 25 years she wore that shirt. We’ll assume that’s at least 20 barbecues, but probably more.
How did Grandma keep the shirt looking clean and pristine over all that time? Surely she would have dropped something on it that would leave a stain.
Am I the only one who is impressed she kept a shirt for 25 years and it still looks that nice?! I need her laundry secrets. pic.twitter.com/09nFHRc5Ru
