It’s been more than 30 years since Top Gun first hit theaters, so it’s sequel is a long time coming.
Now, we know that that not only is the sequel FINALLY becoming a reality and bringing with it, OG cast members Tom Cruise (Maverick) and Val Kilmer (Ice Man). In addition, the latest report by Variety notes that Miles Teller has been tapped to hit this highway to the danger zone and it’s just, well—GIVING. US. LIFE.
Teller of Whiplash and War Dogs fame has been cast in the role of Goose’s son and Maverick’s new protégé.

Teller celebrated his casting with fans on Twitter:

Apparently casting for the part was intense, with several young male stars all vying for the coveted role, including perpetually cocky-smirk-faced Glen Powell of Netflix’s Set it Up, who had this hilariously good-natured tidbit to share with fans:
And fans have not lost that loving feeling—they were stoked:

Good choice! Miles has become a fantastic versatile actor! Loved him in @TYFYSMovie the fact that he will play Goose's son…… I'm ready to see this movie already, & how everything plays out. pic.twitter.com/NLqXZbGS9E

Some wondered if Goose’s spunky widow, Carole Bradshaw, played by Meg Ryan, would be back to reprise her role as Teller’s mom in the new movie:
Will Meg Ryan be back to play his mom?

Others wondered why Goose’s son wasn’t a Gosling…
Missed opportunity (also, I had this on lock):https://t.co/ksAlovBKUK

Ryan Gosling wasn't available?????

hahaha…you are way more aesthetic than I. I was just saying that the son of Goose should be played by a man named Gosling (a young goose)

For the Top Gun virgins among you, this means it’s time to bro-up (even if you’re female) on the original movie’s deets—here’s a quick primer:
Tom Cruise is U.S. Naval Aviator hotshot LT. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a man whose testosterone levels are only outmatched by the size of his ego. Maverick is a man in desperate in need of a life lesson in humility and safety. Let’s just put it this way: he’s all fun and games until someone gets killed—namely his partner in smartassery, hard partying, and arrogance, Radar Intercept Officer LTJG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards.
There’s also the super hot romance between Cruise and his civilian Top Gun Academy Instructor, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, a badass astrophysicist who’s seen more than her fair share of flyboy egos (Kelly McGillis– no word on whether she’ll be returning either) and which culminates in the movie’s now famous white-curtain-blowing-love-making scene.
Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) will be directing the sequel and is said to be going for an homage to the original in tone, style, and score. Top Gun: Maverick is due in theaters July 19, 2019.
