WARNING: this post contains extremely graphic images
In 2015, American footballer Jason Andrew Pierre-Paul suffered an injury to his hand during a fireworks accident at his home. As a result, he had to have his right index finger amputated and undergo major surgery.
The injury affected his gameplay and he’s lucky to even be able to play football today. Three years later (his post mistakenly says four), on July 3rd, he re-shared his story along with images of his injured hand as a warning against the danger of fireworks.
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
In this case those words are, “don’t play with dangerous things like fireworks,” in large capital letters repeated 250 times.
The images with the message are of an extremely grisly nature and those with a weak stomach should think twice before proceeding.
Here is Pierre-Paul’s post:
Jason Pierre Paul shared some extremely graphic images of his injured hand from his fireworks accident he suffered four years ago and included an important message for those celebrating this year. pic.twitter.com/1HBhu3Hyto

The defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers captioned the photos with this heartfelt message:
It’s been 4 yrs [3 yrs] since my accident and I can truly say I’m very blessed and fortunate to be where I am in life. Looking at these pictures seems unreal and crazy.
How your life can change in the blink of an eye. One of the greatest American traditions in celebrating 4th of July is with fireworks.
Unfortunately, tomorrow someone will be injured playing with fireworks. We are celebrating the birthday of our great nation.
I’m glad to still be alive to show you the outcome of what happened to me. Please don’t feel sorry for me, trust me your boy fine even with missing fingers lol.
Be safe out there otherwise, this can be you.
Twitter users were shocked by the imagery:
That shit looks extremely painful.

Look like a baseball glove that's been in a fire

I can’t imagine how painful that was even with meds

Oh. My. God.

checked my GIF arsenal…. found nothing to convey how these pics make me feel

But despite the graphic images, some were appreciative of Pierre-Paul’s message:
Great way to make an unfortunate avoidable accident into a good message.

Glad you are better. Got me wondering what kind fireworks were you lightning so I’ll be careful with the ones for my family

Holy actual fuck thanks for the heads up.

But some were critical of the NFL sharing the post to their large audience.
A criticism to which this fan responded:
You should be perfectly fine with Kent retweeting this. With July 4th tomorrow everyone knows the story that happened to JPP and for him to share his terrible experience with fireworks and show the public the dangers is a great thing. This type of post could lead to a saved hand
