Downton Abbey Fans, Rejoice–A New Movie Has Been Confirmed

Downton Abbey is back, and bigger than ever.

Following the popular television series ending in 2015, it has been confirmed that the first-ever Downton Abbey movie is in the making. There has been no official release date for the film, but filming and formal production is set to start in September. The film will be distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures.

Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski said the following:

“Since the series ended, fans of ‘Downton’ have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter. We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople…in bringing back the world of ‘Downton’; to the big screen.”

Julian Fellowes, creator of the original series, wrote the screenplay and is slated as producer for the feature film.

Downton Abbey took to Twitter to announce the good news:

This will be the first feature film based on the British drama series, which originally aired on PBS.

Joanne Froggatt, who portrayed Anna May Bates, took to social media to share her excitement for the film:

Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary Crawley, has been outspoken and enthusiastic about this movie for a long time:

She said the following in an interview back in 2017:

“The rumors keep continuing, and I think it’s only a positive sign that people aren’t quite done with it. If we do do the movie, I’m going to seize the opportunity!”

Needless to say, fans of the drama series are equally – if not more – eager for the series’ silver screen debut:

When it was on air, Downton Abbey earned three Golden Globes and 15 Emmys.

Some wish that it was a new television season, not a movie:

The series finale premiered in December 2015. Waiting more than two years since the series ended clearly means that, at least for some, a couple hours of screen time is simply not enough.

Regardless, fans of the franchise can’t wait:

Although nothing has been confirmed, most of the actors are expected to return for the movie – especially considering the social media sharing from stars like Dockery and Froggatt.
