Jane Fonda Confirms That ‘9 To 5’ Is Getting A Sequel—And The Original Cast Is On Board ????

In 1980 the world enjoyed the iconic film 9 to 5 starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three working women who overthrow their controlling boss. And the world was never the same.

A television series based on the movie ran for five seasons, but Jane Fonda remained the only original cast member.  Rita Moreno took over for Lily Tomlin’s part, and Rachel Dennison—Dolly Parton’s younger sister—stepped in for Dolly.

After that, 2009 saw the opening of the Broadway musical based on the movie, starring Allison Janney, Megan Hilty, and Stephanie J. Block in the three roles.

So it’s safe to say 9 to 5 has become a cultural institution…and we didn’t even mention the song.

But a new era, and a new cultural institution, might be on the horizon. Jane Fonda confirmed, according to Entertainment Weekly, that she, Tomlin, and Parton would be gettin’ back to workin’ 9 to 5.

Fonda said that she will be returning in the “role [of] an executive producer,” and she is “working with the writers, with Lily, and talking to the writers.”

Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it.

“I’m sorry to say the situation is worse today,” Fonda said, reflecting upon workplace sexual harrassment and the wage gap, topics she believes the update to the story will cover. “Today a lot of the workforce is hired by an outside company. Who do you talk to if you have a problem?”

“I do think sexual harassment will tend to drop,” she said. “Guys are scared.”

The world is definitely in need of a second 9 to 5.  Maybe it will be called 9-2-5. Wouldn’t that just be perfect?
