On Monday, First Lady Melania Trump announced that she is planning a solo trip to Africa in October. The irony that she will be visiting nations that her husband called “s–thole countries” is not lost on the internet.
According to The Washington Post she said in a statement:
This will be my first time traveling to Africa and I am excited to educate myself on the issues facing children throughout the continent, while also learning about its rich culture and history.

NEW: First Lady Melania Trump will visit several African countries in October: “We are a global society and I believe it is through open dialogue and the exchanging of ideas that we have a real opportunity to learn from one another.”

President Trump did more than ruffle a few feathers last January when he referred to countries in Africa and Haiti as “s–thole countries” during a White House meeting on immigration.
It didn’t take long for Twitter to point out the irony after Melania Trump announced her plans for the trip:
The irony is almost too much to bear.

Surprised she'd go to what her stupid husband calls s***hole countries.

Some commenters said they think she may be doing it intentionally to troll her husband:
Oh, they're definitely in the same marriage, and dislike each other intensely. I read this as another attempt to stick it to her husband, along with her anti-cyberbullying initiatives.

While others thought she might be planning her escape:
Quick Melania. This is your way out.

Do they have 30 day divorces in Africa?!?

Someplace she knows her husband won't follow her.

Describing her intentions with regard to the trip, Melania also said in her statement:
We are a global society and I believe it is through open dialogue and the exchanging of ideas that we have a real opportunity to learn from one another. I look forward to highlighting the successful humanitarian work and development programs being done in many of the countries.
Encouraged that @FLOTUS will be visiting Africa this fall, rather than just writing off the continent as a bunch of “s***hole countries.”

Other theories about the trip included:
Are indictments coming down in October?

She’s going solo because her husband, the illegitimate president, blows a gasket at the mere thought of being in the presence of that many POC.

And she'll be out of the country as the U.S. Is in full-blown mid-term campaign mode. #SheGettinOuttaDodge

Twitter user RealHousewifeofCA defended the first lady’s decision:
Newsflash wives & husbands dont agree on everything. Any long term happy couple knows you dont always have the same beliefs or views, sometimes polar opposites.

Newsflash long term happily married men don't pay off porn stars.

The trip will include multiple countries, though the specific itinerary hasn’t been nailed down yet. However, there’s no doubt Melania Trump is counting the days until her departure.
