Melania Trump Announces Solo Trip To Africa—And The Irony Is Not Lost On The Internet

On Monday, First Lady Melania Trump announced that she is planning a solo trip to Africa in October. The irony that she will be visiting nations that her husband called “s–thole countries” is not lost on the internet. 

According to The Washington Post she said in a statement: 

This will be my first time traveling to Africa and I am excited to educate myself on the issues facing children throughout the continent, while also learning about its rich culture and history.

President Trump did more than ruffle a few feathers last January when he referred to countries in Africa and Haiti as “s–thole countries” during a White House meeting on immigration.  

It didn’t take long for Twitter to point out the irony after Melania Trump announced her plans for the trip:

Describing her intentions with regard to the trip, Melania also said in her statement:

We are a global society and I believe it is through open dialogue and the exchanging of ideas that we have a real opportunity to learn from one another. I look forward to highlighting the successful humanitarian work and development programs being done in many of the countries.

The trip will include multiple countries, though the specific itinerary hasn’t been nailed down yet. However, there’s no doubt Melania Trump is counting the days until her departure.
