Prince Harry and Meghan Markle only just married, however, all thoughts are already on children. Except, once the inevitable happens, it turns out that the pair won’t actually technically have custody of their own kids.
A royal expert, Marlene Koenig, stated…
“The sovereign has legal custody of the minor grandchildren.”
Yup, Queen Elizabeth II would legally have custody of the kids.
She went on…
“This goes back to King George I, and the law’s never been changed. He did it because he had a very poor relationship with his son, the future King George II, so they had this law passed that meant the King was the guardian of his grandchildren.”
As it turns out, while the law is mostly a technicality, there are odd ways in which it’s still exercised.
For instance, even Prince William and Duchess Kate need to ask Queen Elizabeth permission to travel out of the country with their children. However, this too is mostly just a formality, and it’s highly unlikely that the Queen would exert real control over the day to day goings on in the lives of her grandchildren.
Understandably, people thought this was a bizarre rule:

Sorry but nobility is nuts

Crazy ole Brits..

And took issue with the archaic law…
Another example of why having a monarchy is a bad idea. That old bag isn’t any better than anyone else. She’s stealing her grandchildren much like she’s stealing Northern Ireland. Who does she think she is?

That’s just wrong on every level!

“ownership of children”…someone else's at that

I think we can rest easy that it won’t actually be enforced by the Queen.
