Authorities Intercept Prisoner’s Letter To White Supremacists Admitting He Burned Black Man Alive

On March 17, John Daniel Carothers was arrested for burning Robert Miller alive. Miller was a black man who lived with Carothers, a white man, in a home for veterans in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Authorities recently determined that Carothers’ heinous act was fueled by racism after they discovered a letter he tried to send from the Rutherford County jail, where he is currently held, to Kingdom Identity Ministries in Harrison, Arkansas.

According the Southern Poverty Law Center, Kingdom Identity Ministries is “the largest supplier in existence of materials related to Christian Identity, a radical-right theology that generally identifies people of color as soulless sub-humans and Jews as satanic or cursed by God.”

Carothers’ letter clearly subscribed to their ideology. He wrote:

To my brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ our savior and Lord, My name is John D. Carothers and I believe the Bible is about white people and for white people. I am in Rutherford County jail for burning a black man. I set him on fire with lighter fluid poured on his head.

Tennessee does not have a hate crime law but, according to District Attorney Jennings Jones, the hate component could be taken into consideration during sentencing if Carothers is convicted. Carothers has also been charged with arson and seven counts of reckless endangerment for each of the people who were in the home at the time.

People cannot believe the ignorance, hate, and racism Carothers’ letter displayed.

Others are astounded by the hypocrisy of his supposedly Christian actions and beliefs.
