The tensions between Donald Trump and Senator John McCain escalated in 2015 when then candidate Trump insulted the Senator saying he didn’t believe McCain was a war hero because he got captured during the Vietnam War.
On stage and in front of cameras at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Trump infamously said:
“He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
Trump immediately denied making the statement. The animosity only grew from there, especially after Senator McCain joined Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins in their “no” votes on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that had been a centerpiece of President Trump’s campaign.
Recently, Senator McCain’s daughter Meghan stated on the View:
“(Trump’s) comments are never going to be OK with me, especially at this moment in my life. I’m never going to forgive it. I’m never going to move on from it.”
Because of these tensions, much was made of the fact that while Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush were asked to eulogize the late Senator at his funeral, the current President was asked to not even attend. However, Vice President Pence was in attendance as a ‘representative from the Trump administration.’
But given the long history of discord between Senator McCain and the Trump administration, a certain facial expression from the late Senator’s daughter grabbed people’s attention.

Meghan McCain is looking daggers at Pence as he speaks his crap
— Patty (@eaglepatty51) August 31, 2018
Dumbass @VP is speaking right now at John MCCain’s service at the Capital. If Meghan McCain’s looks could kill, we’d be burying HIM at sundown. LMAO!!!

Feel the anger of Meghan McCain. Beware, Pence!

But others felt that the look was being read into.
You are full of it. I watched the same think and I did not think that Megan was mad. She obviously is upset because she loved her Dad. You all need to find something better to do with your lives.

She’s literally looking @VP as he speaks. Was she not supposed to look? Please don’t politicize this hero’s legacy.

Let her mourn.

However many empathized with the stare and speculated that it was because of a specific moment.

Pence wasn’t there because trump asked him to be, he was there because Sen McCain asked him to be there. Given the awful things trump has said about him pence should have had the decency not to mention trump’s name. Ignorant just like his boss.

I cannot believe that this man Pence had the audacity to disrespect @SenJohnMcCain by mentioning that Trump. That was an insult and a dig. Also trying to please Trump at McCain’s expense. So maddening!

I think she is angry that he mentioned trump's name during service when McCain explicitely did not want him here…..not even a mention of him.

The late Senator John McCain promoted civility, consensus and patriotism. It can be understood why those beliefs might not jibe with the Trump administration.
