If you tell any millennial that “the Queen is coming,” they’ll reply with “SHUT. UP!” and proceed to sing the national anthem of Genovia.
If none of those references rings a bell, I’m talking about The Princess Diaries.
The 2001 film starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teenage girl who suddenly discovers that her estranged and recently deceased father was the crown prince of a far-off land.
When Mia learns of her royalty, she proceeds to meet her grandmother and queen of Genovia, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (played by the always fabulous Julie Andrews).
The story, originally written as a book by Meg Cabot, proceeds to tell a coming-of-age story with a bit of a Cinderella-esque twist.
Mia evolves from an awkward teenager to a polished young royal, and viewers of the 17-year-old film watch with bated breath to see if Mia proves herself worthy of the throne while also maintaining the things that are truly important to her.
Perhaps one of the best parts of the film and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was the relationship between Mia and Queen Renaldi.
Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews share a special bond on screen.
If ever anyone was unsure of the authenticity of their connection, they clearly didn’t watch the DVD extra that featured the two leading ladies sharing a traditional high tea while providing commentary on the movie.
Yesterday, Dame Julie Andrews celebrated her 83rd birthday. To commemorate the occasion, her on-screen granddaughter posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.
The caption reads,
“The importance of grace;
The knowledge that power is nothing without respect;
Why one must have patience, positivity, perspective, manners, kindness, and humility
The joy in treating people as a gift rather than a burden;
How far choosing gratitude can get you…
If I know anything about any of this,
It’s because I was lucky enough to have learned from the very best at the very beginning.
Happy Birthday Julie, Queen Eternal.
All my love,
Written like a true princess.
The internet is totally in love with the fact that Mia and her grandmother have held onto their relationship after all these years.
Anne Hathaway’s birthday post to Julie Andrews made me cry this morning. The importance of grace. Indeed.

The walk down memory lane also got fans asking for another installment in the story of Mia Thermopolis.
Trilogy hopefuls, you just might be in luck. Meg Cabot did, in fact, confirm that a script for Princess Diaries 3 has been written.
