Woman Steps In To Defend Two Hispanic Women Who Were Being Harassed For Speaking Spanish In A Grocery Store

When two Hispanic women were being harassed for speaking Spanish in a grocery store, another woman came to their defense—and the internet loves her for it.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon in the aisle of a City Market grocery store in Rifle, Colorado, when Linda Dwire allegedly harassed two Hispanic women, Fabiola Velasquez and Isabel Marin, for speaking Spanish. Overhearing the conversation, a fourth woman, Kamira Trent, came to their aid, scolding Dwire for being racist.

After the exchange, Trent called the cops and the woman was arrested and charged with two counts of bias-motivated harassment.

The confrontation was caught on video and originally posted on Facebook where it has been viewed over 500,000 times according to BuzzFeed News.

The first thing Twitter users wanted to know was the identity of the “Shero”:

The woman’s cousin was more than happy to speak up:

Twitter users applauded Kamira Trent’s stand against racism:

Trent’s willingness to stand up to the woman has inspired others:

This Twitter user saw Trent’s way of speaking to the woman as an example:

In a call with BuzzFeed News, Dwire said she was not racist and that her comments to the two Hispanic women were merely about patriotism.

She said:

It has nothing to do with race. It’s a patriotic thing. When people come to my country, they need to love it enough to speak English.

Valesquez saw things differently. She told BuzzFeed News that the woman was aggressive—yelling and putting her hand in their faces. She said she felt like the woman could have potentially harmed them.

Regarding Dwire’s claim of not being racist, Valesquez commented:

If she wasn’t racist, she wouldn’t care what language we would speak. It baffles me because I don’t understand what concept they have about us [immigrants]. What are we trying to take away from them exactly?

According to The Washington Post, there’s been a distinct uptick in racist acts such as this since President Trump took office:

On a lighter note, everyone seemed to love the worker at the end of the video who went around asking if everyone was all right:
