Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was recently the subject of a racist robocall that went out to Florida voters on Tuesday.
It began with a speaker portraying Gillum in an offensive minstrel-style dialect.
“Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.”
Throughout the call, minstrel music played in the background while monkeys screeched. The fake ad outlined Gillum’s healthcare plan, saying he will not use “science, or whatnot,” but that his plan includes putting chicken feet under pillows during the full moon. The call also said Jews will vote for the current mayor of Tallahassee because they are, “the ones that been putting Negroes in charge over the white folk, just like they done after the Civil War.”
At the end of the call, it was revealed that the ad was paid for by white supremacist group The Road to Power.
Gillum’s spokesperson, Geoff Burgan, made a statement following Tuesday’s call.
“These disgusting, abhorrent robocalls represent a continuation of the ugliest, most divisive campaign in Florida’s history. We would hope that these calls, and the dangerous people who are behind them, are not given any more attention than they already have been.”
Gillum’s opponent, Rep. Ron DeSantis, said through his spokesperson, Stephen Lawson, that his campaign had no connection to the calls.
“Our campaign has absolutely nothing to do with this robocall and joins those in condemning it. In fact, we would encourage the Gillum campaign to join us in rooting out and exposing once and for all those who are behind this disgusting call.”
DeSantis, however, previously told voters not to, “monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state.”
People found the call appalling.

Others pointed out that, while the call is vile, it is nothing new for African Americans.
Disgusting? Yes. Shocking? Not for people who experience this often.

If Gillum wins the election, he will be Florida’s first African-American governor. Election day is November 6.
