Kerry Washington Surprises Fans After Correcting Craig Melvin That She’s A Mother Of Three, Not Two

Kerry Washington won the hearts of television watchers everywhere with her role as Olivia Pope in Scandal. Currently, she’s starring in American Son on Broadway opposite Steven Pasquale.

She stopped by The Today Show to promote the play when Craig Melvin referred to her as a ‘mother of two.’

Washington quickly corrected him and said:

“I am a mother of three.”

Washington has two children with her husband Nnamdi Asomugha; a son named Caleb Kelechi and a daughter named Isabelle Amarachi. Of course, the response led many to wonder if the star had just announced some huge news right there on The Today Show.

Fans were all over it.

The full interview can be seen below.

However, once people began to wonder if she was pregnant, Washington quickly cleared up that she was referring to her 12 year old stepdaughter.

She and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, met during her last stint on Broadway when she was performing in the play Race. Asomugha is a former cornerback for the Oakland Raiders and began a second act as an actor beginning in 2008 with the TV show The Game.

Despite the brief baby excitement, most are just excited to see Washington in American Son.

Those who have seen it gave it high praise.

The play deals with an interracial couple and their son who has gone missing. It explores themes of race, identity and politics.

Washington explained that she relates to the character as a woman of color.

“I’m in a constant conversation with my fears, you know?”

American Son is a hot ticket. Check it out!
