Ted Cruz Tried To Take On Triumph The Insult Comic Dog—And Was Scorched By An Epically Savage Burn 🔥

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert recently decided to send a beast of a correspondent down to one of the hottest contests of this midterm election—the Texas Senate race.

It’s a race so close and contentious for incumbent Senator Ted Cruz that President Trump ordered more than 5,100 U.S. troops to the U.S./Mexican border to distract voters from mid-term election issues and foment fear of approaching “migrant caravans.” A little levity might not only be nice but very necessary.

Enter Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (voiced by comic Robert Smigel) dispatched by Colbert to the campaign trail in Texas, where the cigar-wielding vinyl and faux fur puppet did what he does best: insult both candidates.

Triumph happily mocked Sen. Ted Cruz’s Democratic rival, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, taunting him about his attempt at a punk music career in the ’90s:

“…trust me, if Beto wants to stop border crossings quicker than Ted Cruz, they can just play his album down there.”

Triumph seemed to relish going after Cruz, who unwisely tried to trade barbs with the comic dog puppet, saying:

“Just remember: It wasn’t the Republicans, it was the Democrats that took you into the vet to get fixed and there is freedom on the other side.”

To which Triumph deftly replied:

“I support spaying and neutering, just like Trump did to you.”

It seemed both fans and politicos needing to blow off steam loved the sketch:

Though there were a few Cruz supporters in the crowd who didn’t find the jokes funny:
