The First Trailer For ‘Detective Pikachu’ As Voiced By Ryan Reynolds Is Here—And Fans Are Cautiously Optimistic

POKÉMON: Detective Pikachu won’t hit theatres until 2019, but we got a sneak-peak at the first live-action movie based on the beloved animated series.

Ryan Reynolds will star as the voice of Pikachu alongside Justice Smith, who will play Pikachu’s partner, Tim Goodman. The film’s plot takes place in Rhyme City, a metropolis where humans and Pokémon co-exist.

The world’s most famous Pokémon shocked fans by SPEAKING ENGLISH (!?) in the new trailer.

This actually looks pretty cool! Apparently, Pikachu’s partner is the only person who can understand him, which leads the pair to team up and solve crimes. Fans of the series were quick to notice that the main protagonist, Ash Ketchum, appears mysteriously absent from POKÉMON: Detective Pikachu.

Here’s how Pokémon fans worldwide reacted to the surprising trailer.

People fell in love with Pikachu’s super fluffy look, and also adored other Pokémon featured in the trailer.

Some couldn’t get over the choice of having Ryan Reynolds voice Pikachu.

Live-action versions of cartoons aren’t always the best, but fans seem optimistic about this one.

Though some Pokémon fans remain skeptical of Ryan Reynolds playing Pikachu, we reckon he’ll do a fantastic job. But we’ll have to wait until next spring to visit Rhyme City and find out for sure!
