Two Women Made History By Sharing The First Same-Sex Kiss To Air On The Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is watched worldwide every year but this year Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla made a little bit of history.

The pair currently stars in the musical The Prom on Broadway. They play a high school lesbian couple who are trying to convince their school to allow them to go to the prom as each other’s dates. When the school refuses, a caravan full of Broadway stars comes into town to protest and convince the school administration to change their position.

As many Broadway shows do, The Prom performed a musical number from their show at the parade. But this particular song featured a moment that, despite all the gains made by the LGBTQ community in recent years, was the first of its kind in the telecast: a same-sex kiss.

A video of the performance can be seen below.

People were here for it.

Some pushed back against the inevitable conservative backlash.

Many felt this was the representation they needed to see in the world.

No matter how much it may seem like we are moving backward these days, it’s moments like these that remind us that, in many ways, we’re still moving forward.
