Library Honoring Michelle Obama Vandalized With Graffiti By Trump Supporters

A Washington D.C. Free Little Library dedicated to former First Lady Michelle Obama was repeatedly vandalized by one or more pro-Trump supporters. The free neighborhood book exchange holds a small plaque reading:

In Honor of Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama. Lawyer, writer, and First Lady of the United States.

Maureen Dolan-Galaviz, who created the library, says it was damaged numerous times including broken glass and scrawling Trump’s name over Obama’s. Galaviz doesn’t understand why the attacks keep occurring. She told The Washington Post:

Who would do that? If there is one thing that should be off limits it’s the idea that we all deserve access to books.

Her neighbors agree. Debby Hanrahan added:

I’ve never seen the vandal. None of us have time to stand guard and protect it. We are a neighbourhood of writers and readers. For somebody to have something out for a little library, I just can’t fathom it.

Dolan-Galaviz admitted the creation of the neighborhood library was an act of resistance to the election of Donald Trump to the White House. She says:

I think the whole city was reeling from the realisation that the Obamas were going to be out. This was a way of saying, ‘We are still here.’ It was a little act of, not rebellion, but standing our ground.

The Free Little Library project was set up in 2009. Since then communities and neighborhoods across the United States and 88 countries have created free book exchanges.

Twitter users were both annoyed and slightly amused.
