Angela Ponce is the current reigning Miss Spain, which meant that this past Sunday, she competed in the Miss Universe pageant.
While she did not win the crown, Ponce broke major ground as the pageant’s first openly transgender contestant. This was made possible thanks to the 2012 reversal of a policy that barred transgender women from competing.
And Ponce tore it up on the runway.

Carrying a bold message of inclusion, transgender rights and a rebuke to US President Trump, Miss Spain's Angela Ponce is blazing a trail as the first transgender contestant in the 66-year history of #MissUniverse https://t.co/H4eRXb45VD pic.twitter.com/bh6J5IAhNp

Miss Spain #AngelaPonce is the first transgender contestant at the #MissUniverse and she's a favourite to win. "Trans women have been persecuted and erased for so long. I’m showing that trans women can be whatever they want," she says. https://t.co/k1EywkMgWo pic.twitter.com/GqyedDH0DI

Ponce explained in an interview:
“Trans women have been persecuted and erased for so long. I’m showing that trans women can be whatever they want.”
People were here for her.
Angela Ponce is a winner already by simply standing in front of a world audience. Defying hate and bigotry. A powerful woman with beauty, advocacy, and a heart. Awoman!

And many pushed back against Ponce’s haters.
I truly hope all of the people who don't know any better get to meet and befriend a transgender individual in their lives. When you truly get to know them, you realize without a doubt that they were NEVER meant to be anything other than who they identify as.
