Dan Buettner, a New York Times bestselling author who studies cultures around the world with high rates of centenarians, found a common denominator when he looked at certain regions he calls “Blue Zones.” In places like Okinawa in Japan, Icaria in Greece, Loma Linda in California, Nicoya in Costa Rica, and Sardinia in Italy, Buettner found that gardening, along with other factors, was a common trait that elongated life expectancy.
There were a few tiny elements that also came into play, such as daily exercise, a plant-based diet, and social support networks. Other than those minor things, gardening played a big part with people hitting the 100-year mark.
Buettner tells the BBC :
“If you garden, you’re getting some low-intensity physical activity most days, and you tend to work routinely.”
Buettner also says a 90% plant-based diet helps, especially if you grow those fruits and vegetables yourself.
