Texas Venue Abruptly Cancels Filter Concert Due To ‘Safety Concerns’ After Band’s Anti-Trump Facebook Post

It doesn’t matter who you are; if you announce you’ll verbally bash President Donald Trump in public during your music concert, you better brace yourself.

Incurring the wrath of Trump’s followers may bring the curtain down before you even hit the stage.

At least, that’s what happened to ’90s rock band Filter hoping to entertain fans nostalgic with songs like “Take a Picture.”

The band’s frontman, Richard Patrick, posted footage from his soundcheck leading up to a show at the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center in El Paso, Texas, and promised fans there would be “a lot of Trump bashing.”

He also planned to integrate a strong political stance into the show, which freaked out the performance venue.

Teasing audiences with what’s to come backfired and the venue pulled the plug on the show after receiving complaints over Filter’s anti-Trump announcement.

What kind of dystopian B.S. are we living in right now?

Following the cancellation, Patrick posted an update on Instagram.

“Speaking Rock Casino in El Paso, TX, the Tigua Tribe’s Casino / Resort / Music Venue has cancelled tonight’s FILTER show, due to a humorous Facebook post written by vocalist, Richard Patrick, and the band’s plans to use the American flag turned upside down in their background video on stage.”

FILTER(ED) IN TEXAS Speaking Rock Casino in El Paso, TX, the Tigua Tribe’s Casino / Resort / Music Venue has cancelled tonight’s FILTER show, due to a humorous Facebook post written by vocalist, Richard Patrick, and the band’s plans to use the American flag turned upside down in their background video on stage. The “offending” post, which included a short video of the band soundchecking at the venue: This is sound check!! We’re Playing El Paso!!! Get here later and it will be packed!! A lot of Trump bashing! Does anyone know Beto?? Bring Beto! The band was told the venue “didn’t like” the post and that they were getting threatening phone calls and bomb threats from Texans who didn’t like it either. The tour manager was in the green room and woke up from a pre-show nap to 30 yellow-shirted security guards and the General Manager shouting expletives and telling the band they were not welcome at the venue. "The First Amendment does not exist in this Casino. Get the [email protected]*k out," they said. Management also told Patrick that it was illegal to display the flag upside down in their video. The law to which they might refer is Title 4, US Code “(a) The flag should never be displayed with union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” Patrick explains “This is a dire emergency! This country is totally jacked up!! This is my right to artistic expression. If they are going to tell me that I am un-American for saying that about the President, I’d ask them if they have been to Iraq or Afghanistan. I have been over there and love and respect the job that our troops are doing over there – fighting to ensure our rights to say what we like. As a matter of fact – I was asked recently what FILTER stands for and THIS IS IT – our freedom of expression!” In addition to the First Amendment, The Texas Constitution, in Article I, sections 8 and 27 protects the “liberty to speak, write or publish … opinions on any subject.” You have the right to express your views in these ways regardless of how unpopular or controversial they may be. #freespeech #america #GOP #filter2019 #reBus

The band’s tour manager awoke from a pre-show nap to an outburst from five members of the venue’s security team and general manager who hurled expletives and shouted:

“The First Amendment does not exist in this Casino. Get the [email protected]*k out.”

In addition to expressing they did not like the Facebook post, Speaking Rock Casino claimed it was illegal for the band to display the American flag upside down, which was something Filter planned to do for a video montage projected on a screen.

The venue may have referred to Title 4, US Code “(a) The flag should never be displayed with union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property,” and Patrick confirmed that an exception should be made because, “This is a dire emergency! This country is totally jacked up!! This is my right to artistic expression.”

“If they are going to tell me that I am un-American for saying that about the President, I’d ask them if they have been to Iraq or Afghanistan. I have been over there and love and respect the job that our troops are doing over there – fighting to ensure our rights to say what we like.”

While there are guidelines for properly displaying the U.S. flag, it is not against the law to ignore the codes.

Patrick added that Filter stood for freedom of expression and invoked Article I, sections 8 and 27, which protect the “liberty to speak, write or publish … opinions on any subject.”

He concluded the Instagram update with:

“You have the right to express your views in these ways regardless of how unpopular or controversial they may be.

The venue issued a statement in a since-deleted Facebook post explaining the cancellation of Filter’s performance.

“Unfortunately due to safety concerns associated with Filter’s performance tonight we will be canceling their show. We want everyone who comes to our venue to experience entertainment with positivity, union, safety, and joy.”

“We all have our own political views and want to respect everyone’s opinion, but our shows will not be a platform for it. We apologize for the cancellation.”

Fans hoping to catch the performance were majorly peeved.

Texans siding with the band said that not everyone in El Paso upholds the same limited views as the venue.

While 45 didn’t have anything to do with this kerfuffle directly, he still manages to ruin things for everybody.

Sigh. Welcome to the “land of the free.”
