Babysitting can range from parents hiring older kids in their neighborhood for $5 an hour all the way to full-time, live-in nannies who make annual salaries. Regardless of the extremes, however, childcare costs money and you would think all parents would be well aware of this fact.
However, Reddit user VortexThing recently shared a babysitting horror story to the subreddit r/ChoosingBeggars.
Her post is titled:
“Sister sent me this…she was blocked immediately after”
The post has over 70,000 upvotes and more than 4500 comments.
The TL;DR version is this:
VortexThing’s sister is a student and had agreed to babysit children at a rate of $16 an hour.
After not receiving payment after the babysitting job was finished, the young woman reached out to the mother to set up a time to collect her payment.
The mother says she wasn’t “aware payment was involved.”
She goes on to say:
“You got free ice cream and a day of fun…I’m sorry for the misinterpretation.”
Luckily VortexThing’s sister sticks to her guns and calls the mom out, even sending screenshots of their previous text agreement of $16 an hour.
However, the mother calls the babysitter “stuck up” and tries to “compromise” at $20 — for the entire day.
VortexThing’s sister replies:
“No. I watched your kids for eight hours and we agreed on $16/hour. $128 is the total.”
The mother flatly refuses, and when the babysitter offers to compromise at $100 she is called a “stuck up c—-” and is immediately blocked.
The internet cannot believe the mother’s outrageous behavior.
“Make posters and spread them throughout the entire neighborhood.”
“Fuck these parents. I want to watch them burn. And get destroyed by reddit, by all social media, by their community, by people in China and France and the entire world.”
“Fuck this person. This person is absolute scum.” –OkieDokieHokie1
“Small claims court. It’s easy to file. Make sure you include damages for the small stuff, like the court filing fee and taking time off work. If they don’t show up, you get a judgement by default. If they do show up, you’ll still win and they’ll get a tongue lashing from the judge.” –qualiman
“This is exactly what small claims courts is for. It is definitely NOT a lot of legal work. You go down to the courthouse, fill out a form, pay a small filing fee which you’ll generally ask for back when you file (I’m suing for $128 plus court fees). You go in front of a judge, tell your story, show your text messages, open and shut case.” –stickyvonicky
“Pleaassse let this go on Judge Judy” –likeitironically
“The woman would probably need to get a sitter for her kids if she had to show up to small claims court. What a vicious cycle.” –swapmeetpete
“‘I delete my messages often’ OOH OKAY THEN THE SCREENSHOT I JUST SHOWED YOU IS INVALID. how dumb are these people.” –TriggerHydrant
“‘You got free ice cream and a day of fun’ ????” –ed8907
“For the love of internet gods please take this bitch to small claims and share the goodness with us later.” –Mr-Greenie
“I doubt this is the first time this woman has pulled this stunt. What an asshole. Small claims court for sure. If anything, to prevent her from doing this to another sitter.” –donadora
“at this point it is most definitely about the principle of it, and just about any judge (I would think) will immediately see that you are right and she should pay what is owed.” –DragonGyrlWren
“Yep. It is absolutely about the principal of the thing. This woman is counting on OP’s sister being too chicken-shit to do anything about it and she needs to be proven wrong.”
“Even if she decides small claims court is not worth the trouble, I would send this conversation to everyone she knows and see what her friends and family think of her for pulling some shit like this. See if she finds a babysitter for those kids ever again.” –mkp132
“I’d post this on her Facebook page if I could. And on all her friend’s pages, and every childcare page… let everyone know that she refuses to pay as agreed after service has been provided. Maybe someone will shame her into paying what she owes?” –XrayMomma
We hope VortexThing’s sister will get the justice and payment she deserves!
